The village of Fres is considered to be one of the biggest and most graphical villages in the area of Apokoronas.   This picturesque village is located under the White Mountains, in the north side of the province.  Due to its distance from the beach – around 11km – the village hasn’t been commercialized like some of the other villages in Crete.  This enables it to retain its charm of a typical Cretan village.  In Fres, you can find the real Cretan lifestyle.  Daily you will see the  420 (approximately) inhabitants of the village go about their work on agriculture and farming.  The local are extremely hospitable and you will see them enjoying their coffee or wine in the traditional Greek cafés (“Kafeneion”) bars of the big square of the village under the centenarian planes trees.  The village has a grocery store with traditional products, cafés, tavernas, a small medical centre, police station, post office, etc.  7 klns away is the village of Vamos which is the caopital of the Apokoronas.  Here you will find all amenities. Vamos has a large public medical centre,  pharmacy, banks, post office, police station, and cafés, taverns and large supermarkets. 11klms from Fres is the tourist resort of Kalives.  Apart from the fantastic beach you will find all amenities, plus a large selection of restaurants, water sorts etc.  The village of Fres is 25km away from Chania and the central hospital of the town.  Around 30 km from the airport and also the same distance from Rethymnon town.
